Zirconia - Zirconium (ZrO2) Abutments

Zirconia abutments were introduced into dental implantology as an alternative to the metal abutments. Due to its biocompatibility, colour and its mechanical properties, Zirconia is a well suitable replacement for metal abutment. The bacterial adhesion, which is important in the maintaining of zirconium restorations without periodontal problems, was proven satisfactorily low. One main bene t is that no allergic reactions can be expected when the zirconia is used. In addition, there is almost no danger of corrosion which is often the problem with metal based abutment. It also boasts of its extraordinary strength & durability that could last for a very long period of time. Metal free abutments are also resistant to acids that may interact with the mouth. Zirconia (ZrO2).

Zirconium dioxide is one of the most studied ceramic materials. Pure ZrO2 has a monoclinic crystal structure at room temperature and transitions to tetragonal and cubic at increasing temperatures. Several different oxides are added to zirconia to stabilize the tetragonal and/or cubic phases: magnesium oxide (MgO), yttrium oxide, (Y2O3), calcium oxide (CaO), and cerium(III) oxide (Ce2O3).
