Temporary Peek Abutment | EM™ - Dental Implant components

Edison Medical temporary abutments are manufactured from either titanium or PEEK, which are optimal materials for their purpose, from both a biocompatibility and mechanical perspective.

Both Edison Medical’s titanium and PEEK temporary abutment lines are available for rotational and anti-rotational connections, and all temporary abutments come accompanied by a fixation screw. Edison Medical temporary abutments are compatible with over 70 implant system brands, including Megagen®, Straumann®, BioHorizon®, Nobel Biocare® and Astra®.

Titanium temporary abutments

Titanium is one of the most cherished metals in the dental implantology industry, demonstrating highly desirable mechanical, physical and biocompatible properties for use in the oral environment.

Being lightweight with a high strength-to-weight ratio and resistance to corrosion makes it incredibly versatile in use for both temporary and long-term implant restoration components. As a temporary abutment material, its light weight is especially advantageous in direct-loading scenarios.

Edison Medical’s line of temporary titanium abutments features a grooved cuff that allows for better bonding and can also be measured and cut at the groove for height customization. Edison Medical uses the highest-grade polished titanium (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) for all of its temporary titanium abutments and fixation screws.

PEEK Temporary abutments

Polyether ether ketone, familiarly known as PEEK, is a rather recently-arrived material to the medical industry, but has thus far had great success in the field of dental implantology.

PEEK is a high-performance, medical-grade plastic with a complex semi-crystalline structure that renders it as stiff, durable and as strong as titanium. It is highly biocompatible, biostable, and resistant to chemicals and high temperatures, making it a great material for implementation in dental implantology and prosthodontics, as it can be used for a vast array of restorative indications, as well as easily cleaned and sterilized using in-house equipment.

PEEK exhibits some significant advantages over titanium, such as its natural color that is more akin to the color of a tooth, as well as a lower accumulation of biofilm on the abutment surface. That said, there are still further improvements to the PEEK abutment surface needed before it can stand up to titanium’s performance regarding biocompatibility, proliferation and cell adhesion.

Edison Medical’s PEEK abutments are milled from high-grade PEEK sourced from the Zapp (Germany) Classix line, and are available in a range of cuff heights and three different angulation options: straight, 15° and 25°.

Temporary abutments for critical healing phases

The temporary healing abutment comes into play during one of the most crucial moments of the restoration process: during the post-surgery healing phase. With close proximity to the implant site and thus to the still-healing soft tissue, proper choice of a temporary abutment and its material is paramount, as it influences the healing capacity of the peri-implant soft tissue.

The concern lies not only in proper healing of the soft tissue, but also in its temporization, or soft-tissue shaping, which helps with any necessary widening of the soft tissue around the implant site and improving the esthetic result of the final restoration. Interdental papillae shaping and regeneration can also be achieved with the temporary abutment in order to obtain an ideal emergence profile.

Contraindications for temporary abutments

Temporary implant abutments are most often a necessary element of the restoration process, but in scenarios of extreme implant instability where directly loading after implant placement is considered a risk, temporary abutments may not be recommended for use.

In such a case, the treating dentist, prosthodontist or implantologist may choose to stitch the gums closed over the implant for the duration of the healing process. Alternatively, in the case of a highly stable scenario directly after implant placement, a patient may be eligible for immediate prosthesis placement and forgo the use of a temporary abutment.

What is a temporary abutment?

A temporary abutment is an abutment that is used to the interim healing phase post osteotomy and before final restoration placement. The temporary healing abutment comes into play during one of the most crucial moments of the restoration process: during the post-surgery healing phase, where this abutment can aid in both soft tissue healing and shaping. Soft tissue shaping, or temporization, helps with any necessary widening of the soft tissue around the implant site and improves the esthetic result of the final restoration. Interdental papillae shaping and regeneration can also be achieved with a temporary abutment in order to obtain an ideal emergence profile.
